Zone Magazine Issue 035 Spring 2022 – NERVO

Well Folks, Lots of great things happening here at Zone HQ just for you lot, so keep coming back! Well its Spring 2022, and what a strange one STILL! As the world of events gets back moving, we have a packed issue with all the regulars, and lots of interviews!

In our feature interviews in this issue we talk to cover superstars NERVO. From songwriters to artists and super-fans to superstars, electronic dance music’s first sisters – Mim and Liv Nervo of NERVO – have staged a miraculous climb onto the international stage, straight from the pit in front of it. These multi-talented DJ dynamos are the all-time top-ranking female DJs in the world, voted by their legions of fans to No. 16 on DJ Magazine’s influential “Top 100 DJs” poll while continuing to rank as the top female DJ’s in the world today. In-demand and beloved across the globe, their nonstop schedule takes them from the shimmering beaches of Ibiza, to their studio in their home-away-from-hometowns of London and LA, to the towering Main Stages of the biggest festivals in the world including Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza, Creamfields, Balaton Sound, EDC, Electric Zoo, ULTRA and many more. Everywhere they go, their infectious energy, fearless personal style, and deep love and understanding for the music precedes them.

” Purple hair and purple lipstick; we did it all. We almost broke ribs being in the front row of the mosh pit. We were those people in the crowd for so many years, to be playing on the same bills with some of those artists now is just electrifying ” – Mim

From the USA, we speak to JONATHAN COWAN. As a Miami-based DJ, entrepreneur and producer, Jonathan Cowan boasts an impressive resume that spans more than 30 years. During this time, he has firmly cemented his name as an icon in the nightlife scene – not only in Florida, but internationally. The man behind brands like Bliss, Nerve, Generic Soul and Groovejet, Cowan’s vision has made a major impact on the industry both in his hometown and abroad, and his parties and events have hosted some of the biggest names in dance music. Accolades include single-handedly putting the Shelborne Hotel (Miami Beach) on the map as a Winter Music Conference (WMC) dance music destination, hosting (and DJing) the first-ever Music On event for Marco Carola’s brand, and a lengthy laundry list of successful annual WMC parties over the last two decades.

” Bliss was my little labor of love. We had vinyl releases from the Ikes of quivver, Anthony Pappa, Pete Lazonby, etc etc and did Cd mix comp releases for everyone from Parks and Wilson, to Steve Lawler, and even the mighty Renaissance with Dave Seaman “

From the UK we caught up with MATT FAX. Matt Fax rose to fame as a precocious teenager with a penchant for sound design and killer beats which got the attention of pioneering artists such as Laurent Garnier early on. Beginning his journey back in 2009, Matt, now in his mid-20s, has releases on seminal imprints Anjunabeats, Armada Music, Black Hole Recordings, mau5trap and more, enjoying continued support from everyone from Armin van Buuren to Gareth Emery.

” I don’t really know in advance what I’m going to play. I know some tracks are inevitable like To the Ground, Torn or Close My Eyes. I just go with the flow and read the crowd. I might mostly drop bangers, the crowd is here to dance, right? “

We speak to Progressive House man from Serbia called HOBIN RUDE. Hobin is a 23 year old Serbian progressive house DJ & Music Producer based in Belgrade. Seamlessly searching for deeper meaning through music, rooted in rhythm and gently carried forward by the beauty of the melody while subsidized by deep sonic patterns. As an embodiment of passion and dedication, Hobin Rude managed to gain an impressive foothold in the worldwide Progressive scene within a short amount of time.

” The thing that keeps me going is seeing biggest artists from the industry frequently playing my tracks like Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy Mantzur, Armen Miran and many more… That tells me that I am doing something good “

From Germany we speak to hardstyle guru NAZAAR. In the year 2017 we see Farhan Zahir, beter known as NAZAAR get catapulted to the forefront of electronic music. All thanks to his one massive release. Teh official remix of The Chainsmokers “Sick Boy” which was signed to Columbia Records. In the years after we have seen him drop some more earcandy. Whether it was his full 5 track EP titled “The Legacy” on Never Say Die in early 2019 or the infamous club destroyer “BLITZKRIEG” in collaboration with Carnage. It is to say that this incredible producer has had an undeniably successful start to his career and has already begun to distinguish himself from the rest of the pack. He is well on his way to climbing the ranks and becoming one of dance music’s most recognizable figures.

” The songs are all in a specific order! The VISNS EP is a story of my emotions through one of the worst and best moments of my life; the COVID-19 pandemic “

We also talk to PATRICK EVANS from the UK. Patrick Evans is based in Plymouth (UK) and is making his mark on the progressive and melodic techno scene. He has had releases/signings on labels such as Perfecto Black, Elpida Music, Melodic Beats Recordings, E=MC2 Recordings and has more forthcoming, including collaborations and remix duties. Patrick’s musical influences include Stephan Bodzin, Carl Cox, Above & Beyond, Lane 8, Ferry Corsten, BICEP, Avira, gardenstate, Framewerk, Cosmic Gate, Markus Shulz, Sander Van Doorn, Paul Oakenfold and Arty to say a few.

” I remember playing at a club not long after I won the DJ competition – main room full of people and the buzz I had after my set was very intense, but the attention I got afterwards was something I was not used to “
